The Florida Bar allows us to pay up to 25% of the overall
attorneys' fee to a lawyer who refers us a case. This is a
good rule because it encourages lawyers to refer cases to
other lawyers who are more knowledgeable in certain areas
of the law. Any referring lawyer is required to remain equally
responsible with us to the client, however.
A lawyer who sends us a case may desire to act as "co-counsel"
- sharing the actual work and expenses of the case. Co-counsel
may receive more than 25% of the total fee charged.
The client, in any event, pays the same overall fee amount,
regardless of how many lawyers share in the fee or work on
the case.
